The death of Nemesio Oseguera, famously known as "El Mencho," at the hands of the Mexican military on Sunday, has triggered a wave of "narco-blockades" across six states. Cartel gunmen set fire to vehicles and businesses, paralyzing major highways. The violence forced international airlines, including Air Canada and United, to cancel flights to the popular resort of Puerto Vallarta, where tourists watched in disbelief as black smoke filled the sky.

While President Claudia Sheinbaum attempted to calm the nation, stating that activities remain "normal" in most areas, the ground reality tells a different story. Military tanks have been spotted in residential neighborhoods, and the cartel has threatened further bloodshed, both against the government and in internal power struggles. For many, this marks the beginning of a volatile new chapter in Mexico’s decades-long drug war.
