Middle East on the Brink: War Enters Fifth Day with Airstrikes on Tehran and Missiles Targeting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem

The unprecedented military confrontation between Iran and the U.S.-Israeli alliance entered its fifth day with a dramatic escalation, as Tehran faced sustained airstrikes and retaliated by launching a barrage of missiles into the heart of Israel. At dawn on Wednesday, powerful explosions rocked the Iranian capital, according to state television, with blasts reported around the strategic Azadi Square as well as in the eastern and western districts. This surge in violence comes amid expectations that joint American and Israeli strikes will intensify, aimed at decimating Iran's strategic assets and military infrastructure following the assassination of the country's top military commanders and the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei last Saturday.

Israel, in turn, experienced a night of sirens and interceptions as its defense systems were activated against Iranian missiles over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The IDF confirmed that its operations in Iran successfully targeted launch platforms, air defense batteries, and neutralized Iranian soldiers operating these systems, including the destruction of an M17 warplane. The military revealed it has destroyed 300 missile launchers in Iran, conducting 1,200 airstrikes against 2,000 targets since the conflict erupted on February 28. President Donald Trump has hinted that the war, which has seen Hezbollah join the fray and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq attempt to target U.S. interests, could last several weeks or longer, noting that the strikes have eliminated potential future leaders of Iran. With Israel simultaneously pounding Dahiyeh in Beirut in response to Hezbollah's missile fire, the entire region is now engulfed in a rapidly expanding conflict that threatens to redraw the geopolitical map.
