In his first official visit since assuming power, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara arrived in Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin—a landmark moment in Russian-Syrian relations. The leaders discussed strategic topics, most notably the renewal of Russia’s lease for the Hmeimim airbase and Tartus naval base, reinforcing Russia’s role in distributing humanitarian aid to African nations via Syria.

The summit also focused on new arms deals to bolster the Syrian military, with an emphasis on strengthening air defense systems to meet regional challenges. Economically, Russian companies are expected to play an active role in rebuilding Syria’s infrastructure after years of conflict and destruction.
Politically, Putin reiterated Moscow’s support for the Syrian government’s efforts to reclaim sovereignty over all territory and protect national unity, assuring assistance to Damascus in lifting international sanctions, particularly at the United Nations Security Council. President Al-Shara pledged his commitment to upholding all previous agreements.
This visit signals a clear message: Moscow and Damascus are forging a strategic partnership that could reshape regional power dynamics and solidify cooperation on security and economic issues.
