NATO Backs Trump’s Strikes on Iran: Tactical Support and "Article 5" Readiness

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed on Wednesday that the alliance broadly supports President Donald Trump’s military campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. While clarifying that NATO is not a direct combatant, Rutte highlighted that allies are providing "essential enabling assistance" to facilitate U.S. and Israeli operations. He cited Tehran’s "malign influence" and assassination plots on European soil—including threats against his own country, the Netherlands—as primary reasons for the strong consensus within the alliance despite public criticisms from leaders like Emmanuel Macron.

Rutte addressed the potential activation of Article 5 (Collective Defense), maintaining a policy of "strategic ambiguity." He emphasized that keeping the exact threshold for a collective response secret forces adversaries to think twice before targeting NATO interests. The efficiency of this shield was demonstrated by the recent interception of an Iranian missile heading toward Turkey. Furthermore, Rutte expressed unwavering solidarity with Gulf partners, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, ensuring them that NATO remains in constant communication to support their safety against indiscriminate regional attacks.
