Palestinian Foreign Ministry Welcomes US Draft Resolution on Gaza

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the US draft resolution submitted to the UN Security Council regarding the Gaza Strip.

Undersecretary of the Ministry, Omar Awadallah, told "Al-Arabiya/Al Hadath" on Monday: "We have said that any international stabilization force must come with the approval of the Palestinian government and a resolution from the Security Council, provided that this resolution addresses several important issues, including Palestinian independence and linking the West Bank to the Gaza Strip." Awadallah added that the Palestinian Authority (PA) "appreciates the American efforts" to get the resolution adopted by the Security Council and to form this international force, which must work with the Government of the State of Palestine.

Anticipated Vote

These statements come hours before an anticipated Security Council vote on the US draft resolution, which supports President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, particularly regarding the deployment of an international force in the Strip, at a time when Washington is warning that failure to adopt the text may lead to renewed fighting.

  • International Stabilization Force: The force would secure border areas and disarm the Gaza Strip, working toward the "permanent disarming of irregular armed groups" and protecting civilians. This force will cooperate with Israel, Egypt, and newly trained Palestinian police.

  • Transitional Governance and Statehood: The draft also allowed for the creation of a "Council of Peace," a transitional governing body for Gaza, which would theoretically be headed by Trump, and whose mandate would last until the end of 2027. Crucially, the resolution, for the first time in its main text, referenced the possibility of a future Palestinian State once the PA implements required reforms and reconstruction in Gaza begins.
