In a significant display of internal fracture within the Iranian leadership, President Masoud Pezeshkian partially walked back his historic apology to Gulf states on Sunday, March 8, 2026. After facing fierce backlash from the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and hardline clerics who labeled his stance "weak and unprofessional," Pezeshkian claimed the U.S. "distorted" his words to sow discord. Speaking on state television, he struck a defiant tone, asserting that Iran would "respond forcefully" to any attack launched from neighboring territories and emphasized that the nation would never succumb to "bullying or injustice."

While the IRGC claims it can sustain "at least six months of intense warfare," U.S. President Donald Trump offered a starkly different assessment. In an interview with CBS, Trump declared that U.S. forces have achieved unprecedented victories, effectively "annihilating" Iran's navy and destroying the bulk of its missile and drone capabilities. Trump reiterated that the only path forward for Tehran is "total surrender" and the establishment of a new, non-hostile leadership. As the war enters its second week, the Iranian clerical establishment is reportedly under immense pressure to expedite the appointment of a new Supreme Leader to maintain national cohesion.
