Riyadh at the UN Security Council: Hormuz Security is a Global Priority, Diplomacy is the Only Way Forward

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia asserted on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, that the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a "collective priority" that serves as a cornerstone for the global economy. Addressing the UN Security Council, Saudi Permanent Representative Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil emphasized that energy, food, and medicine supply chains must remain insulated from conflict, warning that the unprecedented tension in the strait threatens international economic security.

Condemning Violations and Supporting Mediation Dr. Al-Wasil expressed the Kingdom’s regret over the Security Council's failure to pass a specific resolution regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He urged the international community to take decisive action against Iranian violations that have destabilized the region. Simultaneously, Riyadh reaffirmed its full support for ongoing diplomatic efforts, particularly the Pakistani mediation, stressing that dialogue remains the only viable path toward a sustainable solution that addresses decades of instability.

Adherence to International Law Saudi Arabia called on Iran to fulfill its international obligations, specifically UN Security Council Resolution 2817, and to respect state sovereignty and the principle of good neighborliness. Al-Wasil noted that any interference with the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz or Bab al-Mandab is a flagrant violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and a direct threat to global peace, stressing that vital waterways must remain open to ensure the flow of essential global supplies.
