Shield of the Kingdom: Saudi Air Defenses Intercept 15 Iranian Drones Targeting Riyadh and Eastern Province

The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced on Monday, March 16, 2026, the successful interception and destruction of 15 hostile drones launched by Iranian forces toward strategic locations in the Kingdom. Major General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, confirmed that the operation was carried out in two waves: 12 drones were neutralized over the Eastern Province, followed by another 3 drones targeting both Riyadh and the Eastern regions.

High Readiness and Tactical Precision General Al-Maliki emphasized that Saudi air defense systems detected the threats with high precision, neutralizing them before they could reach their intended targets. No casualties or material damage were reported. These attacks are part of the broader regional escalation, as Tehran increases its use of suicide drones to target Saudi infrastructure and residential areas amidst the ongoing military campaign against Iran’s nuclear and military facilities.

Public Vigilance and the "Tawakkalna" Reporting Tool In coordination with these defense successes, the Ministry launched a new reporting feature via the national "Tawakkalna" application. This service allows citizens and residents to immediately report "suspicious aerial sightings," fostering a collaborative security environment. The move aims to speed up response times and minimize risks from falling debris during interceptions, while the Ministry reiterated that the Saudi Armed Forces possess the advanced capabilities necessary to deter any aggression.
