Sisi and Putin Participate in Historic Event for El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate tomorrow, Wednesday, via video conference, in a historic event marking a pivotal step in completing the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project.

حدث تاريخي: السيسي وبوتين يشاركان في تركيب وعاء ضغط مفاعل الوحدة النووية الأولى بمحطة الضبعة

Details of the Event and Strategic Importance

The event centers around two key achievements:

  1. Installation of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) for the first nuclear unit.

  2. Signing of the nuclear fuel purchase order for the plant.

The Spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, Mohamed El-Shenawy, explained that this presidential participation embodies the depth of strategic relations between the two countries, representing an extension of fruitful bilateral cooperation through giant projects that have left clear marks on the path of development, starting from the construction of the High Dam in the 1960s up to the national project for establishing the El Dabaa Nuclear Plant.

Event Coincides with Annual Nuclear Energy Day

The execution of this event coincides with Egypt's celebration of its "Fifth Annual Nuclear Energy Day," observed every year on November 19th. This day commemorates the signing of the governmental agreement between Egypt and Russia to build and operate the El Dabaa Nuclear Plant, marking a symbolic day for the launch of Egypt's peaceful nuclear program.

El Dabaa is set to be Egypt's first nuclear power plant, located in the city of El Dabaa in Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, about 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo. The cooperation agreement between Russia and Egypt was signed in November 2015, and the plant contracts officially came into force in December 2017 during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Cairo.
