"Sovereignty is Off the Table": Denmark Open to Dialogue with Trump on Greenland Security, Not Territory

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed that Denmark remains open to a "constructive dialogue" with the U.S. and NATO regarding security and economic investments in Greenland, provided it does not compromise Danish sovereignty. Her statement follows high-level talks in Davos between President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who clarified that the issue of Greenland's sovereignty was not raised during their meeting.

Frederiksen emphasized that while Denmark is ready to negotiate on political and economic aspects—including the integration of the American "Golden Dome" defense system—the territorial integrity of the Kingdom remains non-negotiable. By coordinating closely with the local Greenlandic government, Copenhagen seeks to balance strategic alliance needs with national interests, amid Trump's earlier threats of punitive tariffs over the island dispute.
