Spain Ignites the Spark of Solidarity: Comprehensive Arms Ban with Israel Echoes Across Europe

Recently, the world has witnessed major political developments in the wake of the Gaza conflict. The Spanish Parliament took an unprecedented historic step, approving a law that prohibits the export and import of weapons from and to Israel. This move follows growing calls to protect civilians in Gaza, and was strongly supported by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, aiming to "curb genocide".

The law was passed with 178 votes in favor and 169 against, with support from leftist Podemos party members who did not make their final decision known until the morning of the vote. This reflects deep polarization within the Spanish Parliament, yet the government was able to secure this achievement with partial, atypical support.

In an earlier speech in New York, Sánchez called for full UN membership for Palestine, reaffirming his country's commitment to international justice. This development coincided with Spain’s Ministry of Defense canceling a $218 million deal for advanced "Lightning 5" bomb guidance systems from Israel’s Rafael company, as well as terminating a $272 million Spike missile deal.

The arms ban has sparked considerable concern within Israel’s defense industry, as officials warn that other European nations might follow Spain’s example, potentially threatening Israel’s record $14.8 billion arms exports in 2024, half of which went to Europe. Experts caution that continued contract freezes could significantly hurt Israel’s defense economy by 2026 and 2027.

Israel now faces mounting challenges due to global political pressures, making sole reliance on the Defense Ministry increasingly unrealistic amid shrinking European support.
