The United Kingdom has announced the temporary closure of its embassy in Cairo, a decision that follows the removal of security barricades from the front of the building by Egyptian authorities. The British Foreign Office stated that its main embassy building in the Garden City district will remain closed "until the impact of these changes is fully assessed," while affirming that the embassy will continue to perform its functions.

Reports indicate that this move is a reaction to growing calls within Egypt for retaliatory measures, prompted by the way London handled a recent protest held in front of the Egyptian Embassy in the UK. According to the "Daily News Egypt" newspaper, a pro-government Egyptian activist was arrested last week and later released after reportedly confronting protesters.
Following the incident, Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel Atty, reportedly had a phone call with UK National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, to seek clarification on the arrest. Abdel Atty had previously stated that Egypt has "the right to respond in kind" to countries that "fail to ensure the protection of Egyptian embassies in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention." The arrest sparked widespread debate in Egypt, with some political officials urging the authorities to remove the security barricades in front of the British Embassy in Cairo.
The British government is said to be in continuous dialogue with Egyptian officials to secure the embassy and ensure the safety of its staff. For consular assistance, the British Foreign Office has provided dedicated phone numbers on its website's travel advice page. The page does not recommend avoiding travel to Cairo but does caution against visiting certain other regions in Egypt.
It is worth noting that the massive security barriers surrounding both the UK and US embassies in Cairo have been in place for years, and some opponents had complained that they obstructed traffic. The British Embassy in Cairo had previously suspended operations temporarily on two occasions, in 2013 and 2014, for various security reasons.
