President Donald Trump is casting a long shadow over the World Economic Forum in Davos, arriving with a fresh wave of trade threats. Trump has vowed to impose 10% punitive tariffs (rising to 25% in June) on eight European allies—including the UK, France, and Germany—unless a deal is reached for the "complete purchase of Greenland." This escalation follows a NATO-led reconnaissance mission to the island, which Trump branded a "dangerous situation" for American security.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent doubled down on the rhetoric, stating, "Europeans show weakness, while the U.S. shows strength," arguing that American control of the Arctic territory is essential for global deterrence. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a "unified and coordinated" European response, threatening to activate the EU’s never-before-used "Anti-Coercion Instrument." As Trump prepares to address Davos, the fragile trade truce is shattered, placing the future of the transatlantic alliance in jeopardy.
