Weapons and Withdrawal: The Obstacles Halting Progress in Gaza Negotiations amid Uncertainty and Suspense

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas have begun in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, amid tension and questions about how quickly a solution might emerge. Informed sources indicate that the first round will not be brief, as achieving a comprehensive agreement requires the parties to work through detailed issues before any ceasefire is announced.

Mutual distrust clouds the talks, with Palestinian factions fearing Israel might suddenly withdraw from negotiations after hostages are released. Meanwhile, a main sticking point is Israel's request for Hamas to disarm—a demand Hamas firmly rejects unless Israel completely withdraws from Gaza and a Palestinian state is established.

High-level delegations from both sides are present in Sharm El-Sheikh, but the absence of lead Israeli negotiator Ron Dermer in the initial round raises questions about Israel’s commitment, while Khalil Al-Hayya leads the Palestinian team after recently surviving an Israeli airstrike.

Hamas is seeking clarification on the mechanisms for prisoner exchanges, Israeli military withdrawal, and a ceasefire, with the fate of hostages and incarcerated Palestinians adding complexity. The future of the negotiations remains unclear, as hopes persist that this round could pave the way toward a lasting resolution.
