U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States is close to finalizing a trade deal with China. Trump made it clear that a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, would only take place if a trade agreement is reached before the end of the year.

Conditions for the Meeting and Economic Rapprochement
In an interview with CNBC, Trump said that the Chinese president "has requested a meeting. I'll end up having a meeting probably before the end of the year if we make a deal. If we don't make a deal, I won't have a meeting."
Trump added that the relationship between the two countries is heading toward an agreement, stating: "We're very close to making a deal. We get along with China very well." These remarks suggest that Trump is using the prospect of a meeting as leverage to accelerate trade negotiations and reach a mutually satisfactory resolution.
