In an uncommon scene under the spotlight of a high-level White House meeting, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s necktie became the focal point of widespread political and media controversy. The affair began during the meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, October 17, 2025, when Hegseth appeared wearing a tie featuring red, white, and blue stripes—colors many saw as resembling the Russian flag.

The debate quickly swept across social platforms after images of the Secretary were juxtaposed with the Russian flag, and Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and special envoy to President Vladimir Putin, shared the image of Hegseth alongside the Russian flag, a move widely interpreted as an implicit celebration of a possible symbolic message beyond mere fashion choice.
Accusations came not only from political opponents but were also spun by both pro- and anti-Trump media outlets, speculating whether the tie’s colors were a deliberate sign of the Secretary’s or the administration’s leanings toward Russia. Rumors intensified after Dmitriev’s post referred to the conspiracy theory movement QAnon, which claims the existence of an elite “deep state” controlling the U.S. government, giving the affair a deeper and more complex context.
On the other side, U.S. Vice President JD Vance defended Hegseth, posting on X that the tie’s colors represent the American flag, not Russia’s, though many political commentators pointed out the design closely matches what is commercially sold as a “Russian flag tie.” Dmitriev responded, “Maybe it is good that our countries have the same colors,” emphasizing the symbolism and its political implications.
The meeting’s prime agenda—U.S. support for Ukraine and advanced missile systems to counter Russia—was not immune to the echoes of the tie controversy, especially after President Trump declared his hope that Kyiv would not need additional missiles and called for an end to the war, stressing President Putin’s desire for peace following a phone call.
The symbolic crisis around the “tie” continues to add layers to the ongoing media storms in U.S. and international politics, raising questions about the potential of small details like fashion choices to send intentional political messages or create new disputes, even in official diplomatic occasions.
