The British government announced today, Sunday, a decision to grant the police broader powers to impose restrictions on demonstrations and protests across the country. The move comes at a sensitive time, with UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stating that the series of large and repeated pro-Palestinian demonstrations have caused "significant fear" and a sense of threat among the Jewish community in Britain.

Cumulative Impact of Protests and the Freedom to Live Without Fear
The government stated in an official release that the "cumulative impact" of protests will be taken into account when deciding on restrictions, suggesting that the recurrence of demonstrations in the same area or against the same group could justify additional limitations.
The Home Secretary confirmed that the government will now review all laws related to protests, emphasizing the need to balance fundamental rights. She stated: "The right to protest is one of our country's fundamental freedoms. But that freedom must be balanced with the freedom of their neighbors to live without fear."
Mahmood added that "large and frequent protests can create feelings of insecurity, intimidation, and fear of leaving their homes among certain sections of our country, especially religious groups," asserting that this is precisely what has happened with the Jewish community.
The Secretary also expressed "deep concern about the state of community relations in Britain," noting that there is "a problem not just with rising anti-Semitism, but also with other forms of hatred."
Background to the Decision: Manchester Attack and London Demonstration
This decision follows a large and widespread pro-Palestinian demonstration held in London yesterday, Saturday, despite earlier government calls for its postponement or cancellation.
The timing also coincides with concerning security developments. On Thursday, one person was killed in a ramming and stabbing attack targeting a synagogue in Manchester (North West), while another person was killed by gunfire, believed to have occurred as police attempted to stop the attacker. Police killed the assailant, identified as Jihad al-Shami, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian origin, within minutes of the report regarding the Thursday attack.
