US Strategic Airlift: 1,000 Tons of Munitions Rushed to Israel Amid Critical Interceptor Shortage

As the conflict with Iran enters its third week, the United States has established a massive military "airbridge" to resupply the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). On Sunday, March 15, 2026, reports confirmed that approximately 50 cargo aircraft have delivered over 1,000 tons of weaponry and ammunition to Israel. This urgent resupply follows intense combat operations in which Israel has expended more than 11,000 munitions since "Operation Roaring Lion" began on February 28.

The Interceptor Crisis: High-Stakes Air Defense Israel has formally notified Washington of a critical depletion in its stockpile of long-range interceptor missiles, such as the Arrow and David’s Sling systems. These assets are vital for countering Iran’s ballistic barrages, which have increasingly featured cluster warheads designed to saturate defense networks. While the Israeli Air Force has utilized fighter jets for supplemental interceptions, the primary burden remains on ground-based systems, necessitating a rapid infusion of US-made interceptors and smart bombs.

Funding a Multi-Front War To sustain the war effort, the Israeli cabinet approved a major defense budget expansion of 30 billion shekels (approx. $9.5 billion). This increase was funded by a sweeping 3% cut to all other government ministries. This fiscal shift highlights the strategic reality that neither Washington nor Tel Aviv anticipates a swift end to the hostilities, as Iran continues to launch massive waves of missile and drone attacks across the region.
